SUMMARY OF THE 4TH ANNUAL ILI SYMPOSIUM 2013

We are happy to report we successfully concluded the language symposium held at the Buffalo Thunder Resort & Casino, (Pueblo of Pojoaque) in Santa Fe, New Mexico on October 21-22, 2013. Thanks to all the Attendees, Presenters, Sponsors, and helpful staff at the Buffalo Thunder Hotel. We were excited to have lots of Youth participate in this event.

We had 258 people register for the symposium, representing 68 tribes/nations from USA and Canada. Tribes represented are: Aaniiih and Nakoda, Ak-Chin Indian Community, Alabama Coushatta Tribe of Texas, Cherokee Nation, Cheyenne, Chippewa, Eastern Cherokee, Hopi Nation, Kalinago, Kawaiisu, Kickapoo, Lillooet, Mescalero Apache, Miami Tribe of Oklahoma, Mississippi Band of Choctaw Indians, Mohawks of Ahkwesasne, Muscogee Creek Nation, Navajo Nation, Nicaraguan Chontol, Nlaka’pamux, Northern Cheyenne, Ojibwe, Oneida Nation of Wisconsin, Osage Nation, Otoe Missouria Tribe, Passamaquoddy, Pawnee Nation, Pechanga Band of Indians, Prairie Band of Potawatomi, Pueblo of Acoma, Pueblo of Cochiti, Pueblo of Isleta, Pueblo of Jemez, Pueblo of Laguna, Pueblo of Nambe, Pueblo of Ohkay Owingeh, Pueblo of Pojoaque, Pueblo of San Felipe, Pueblo of San Ildefonso, Pueblo of Sandia, Pueblo of Santa Ana, Pueblo of Santa Clara, Pueblo of Santo Domingo (Kewa), Pueblo of Taos, Pueblo of Tesuque, Pueblo of Zia, Pueblo of Zuni, Sac and Fox Tribe of the Mississippi in Iowa, Salt River Pima Maricopa, Samish Nation, San Manuel Band of Mission Indians, Seminole Tribe of Florida, Senćoŧen, Seneca Nation of Indians, Shingle Springs Band of Miwok Indians, Southern Ute Indian Tribe, Spirit Lake Dakota Nation, St. Regis Mohawk Tribe, Tlingit and Haida Nation Tribes of Alaska, Tohono O'odham, Tonto Apache Tribe, Tsartlip First Nation, Tit’q’et, Tule River Yokuts, Tunica-Biloxi, Winnebago Tribe of Nebraska, Yakama/Colville, Yavapai Apache Nation.

We had 21 presenters in total. 258 Participants whose ages ranged from 6 years old to those over 80. We had 7 sponsors: Lannan Foundation, San Manuel Band of Mission Indians, National Indian Gaming Association, Seminole Tribe of Florida, National Center for American Indian Enterprise Development, Buffalo Thunder Resort and Casino, and Joanie D. Nasher. We received product donations from Whole Foods and Trader Joe’s both of Santa Fe, NM.

Next year’s 5th Annual ILI Symposium October 2014 is already under planning, and we will announce the theme as soon as we emerge from our planning session.
